25 Days of Christmas (Cookies)

Happy Holidays All!  I’d like to do an Advent-calendar-style series of posts just for you – so I picked a rather popular topic: Christmas Cookies.

First of all, for those of you who don’t know what an Advent calendar is, here’s the wiki breakdown which will give you an idea.  This here is also a history of cookies, which I found to be rather interesting.

So what better way to start off a cookie train than with one of the most classic styles: Chocolate Chip.  Although there are many variations on this fairly simple recipe, this is one of my favorites.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven to 325° F (165° C). Grease cookie sheets or line with parchment paper.
  2. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt — set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended.  Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon.
  4. Place ¼ cup dough balls onto cookie sheets. Approx.. 3″ apart.
  5. Bake 15 – 17 minutes, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
