Awesome Fried String Beans with Zesty Dipping Sauce

Prep time: 10 min. | Cook time: 10 min.  | Total: 20 min.

Ingredients:

  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup yellow corn meal
  • 1 TBSP salt
  • 1 ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, ends trimmed
  • 1 cup whole buttermilk

For dipping sauce:

  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup prepared horseradish
  • ¼ cup spicy mustard
  • 1 TBSP white sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ½ tsp oregano
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika

Directions:

  1. To prepare sauce: combine all ingredients, mix thoroughly; chill in refrigerator until ready to serve
  2. Heat 2 inches of oil over medium-high heat in sauce pan to 375º
  3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, corn meal, salt, black pepper, and red pepper; Pour buttermilk into separate bowl
  4. Dip green beans into buttermilk, then dredge in flour mixture; repeat for a second coat
  5. Fry the green beans in batches, approx. 3 min
  6. Remove from oil and lay on paper towel
